You have probably been there. It is 3:00 AM. You are scrolling through a "perfect" baby sleep schedule on a forum, wondering why your little one did not get the memo.
The internet is full of rigid charts. 7:00 AM wake up. 9:30 AM nap. No exceptions. But here is the truth: your baby is a human, not a clock.
At OBubba, we believe in a different approach. We believe that the best baby sleep schedule is not the one found in a book, it is the one your baby tells you they need.
Our philosophy is simple: never prescriptive, always kind. We want to help you learn your baby's unique rhythm, gently, while staying firmly rooted in safe sleep science.
The myth of the "perfect" schedule
We feel the pressure, too. The "shoulds" are everywhere.
- "They should be sleeping through by now."
- "They should be on two naps."
- "You should follow a strict routine."
But rigid schedules often ignore the most important factor: individuality. Every baby has a different sleep need, a different temperament, and a different internal clock. When we try to force a one-size-fits-all schedule, we often end up with an overtired baby and a stressed-out parent.
We do not do "shoulds" here. Instead, we focus on what is. By tracking your baby's natural patterns, you start to see the rhythm that was there all along.

The science of sleep: the bits that matter
While we advocate for flexibility, we never compromise on safety. OBubba's sleep content is designed to sit alongside trusted guidance from organisations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, NHS safer sleep advice, and AASM sleep duration guidance.
Sleep needs by age
It is helpful to know what is "normal," even if your baby deviates from the average.
- Newborns, 0-3 months: Sleep is a bit of a free-for-all. They may sleep in short bursts, and their circadian rhythm is still developing, so day and night can feel muddled.
- Infants, 4-12 months: Many babies need around 12-16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps. This is often when more predictable patterns begin to emerge.
- Toddlers, 1-2 years: Many need around 11-14 hours across the day and night. A lot of children transition toward one nap during this time.
Important note: These are ranges, not rules. Some babies naturally need more, and some need less. Always consult your paediatrician, doctor or health visitor if you have concerns about your baby's development, feeding, breathing, weight gain or health.
Safe sleep is non-negotiable
Whatever your baby sleep schedule looks like, the "how" matters more than the "when."
- Back to sleep: Always place your baby on their back for every sleep, day or night, unless a qualified health professional has given you different advice for your baby.
- Clear cot: Use a firm, flat sleep surface with a fitted sheet. Keep pillows, loose blankets, bumpers and soft toys out of the sleep space.
- Same room: The NHS and AAP recommend room-sharing, but not bed-sharing, for at least the first 6 months.

Understanding wake windows
If rigid times do not work, what does? Wake windows.
A wake window is simply the amount of time your baby is awake between sleeps. Instead of saying "it is 10:00 AM, time for a nap," you look at how long they have been awake.
- Newborns: 45-90 minutes
- 4-6 months: 1.5-2.5 hours
- 7-9 months: 2-3.5 hours
- 10-12 months: 3-4 hours
These ranges are starting points, not strict rules. By focusing on wake windows, you work with your baby's biological drive for sleep rather than fighting against it. You catch the sleepy cues, the eye rubs, the glazed stares, the gentle fussing, before they hit the overtired wall.
How OBubba helps you find your rhythm
This is where we come in. We are not a digital drill sergeant. We are a companion.
OBubba is a parenting assistant app designed to take the guesswork out of your day. We use an intelligent tracking system that learns your baby's unique rhythm.
When you log a sleep or a feed, the app is not just storing data, it is learning. It looks for patterns. It starts to predict when that next nap might be coming, based on your baby, not a generic chart from 1995.
Our main strengths:
- Personalised tracking: OBubba learns your baby's unique rhythm to support a more tailored day.
- Evidence-aware guidance: Sleep support stays aligned with trusted safe sleep principles.
- Never prescriptive: We give you the data and gentle guidance, but you are the expert on your baby.

Building a gentle routine
A routine does not have to be a schedule. A routine is just a sequence of events that tells your baby's brain: "Hey, sleep is coming."
A simple, repeatable wind down could look like:
- Nappy change and a fresh sleepsuit.
- A quiet story or gentle song.
- A cuddle or final feed.
- Into the cot while they are still slightly drowsy.
The goal is not to force sleep, but to create the environment where sleep is invited.
Trusting the process, and yourself
Parenthood is loud. There are so many voices telling you what to do. At OBubba, we want to help you quiet that noise.
Tracking should feel empowering, not overwhelming. If logging every nappy change feels like a chore today, skip it. The app is there to serve you, not the other way around.
Your baby's sleep will change. There will be teething, regressions and growth spurts. There will be days when the "schedule" goes completely out the window. That is okay. That is life.
Let us do this together
You do not have to navigate these early stages alone. Whether you are trying to figure out a baby sleep schedule for the first time or you are deep in the four-month sleep regression, we are here to help.
