🍌 Banana spears rolled in ground oats
Ripe banana spears rolled in finely ground oats, which gives slippery banana extra grip. A no-cook first finger food that is ready in moments and gives slow-release energy.
Makes 3 to 4 spears
Method
- Blitz the oats in a blender until fine.
- Peel the banana and gently push a finger into the top so it splits into three natural spears.
- Roll each spear in the ground oats.
- Serve straight away.
Serving it to your baby
The oat coating stops banana slipping out of little fists. At 6 months, leaving a bit of peel at the bottom as a handle can also help. From 9 months offer small slices or chunks. Always stay with baby while they eat and keep them sitting upright.
For the rest of the family
Slice the rest onto grown-up porridge or toast with nut butter.
Storing and reheating
Best made fresh and eaten straight away, as it browns and loses texture quickly. Any untouched leftovers can be covered and kept in the fridge for up to 1 day. Throw away anything from a bowl baby has eaten from.

Questions parents ask
How do I split a banana into spears?
Peel it, then press a finger gently into the top. Most bananas split naturally into three long spears.
Can I use ground almonds instead of oats?
Yes, once tree nuts have been introduced. Finely ground nuts are fine from around 6 months, but whole or chopped nuts are not suitable for under 5s.
