Ingredients

Method

  1. Brown the lamb in a dry pan, spooning off excess fat, then add the onion and carrot and cook for 8 minutes.
  2. Stir in the lentils, rosemary, tomato puree and water. Simmer gently for 30 minutes until the lentils are soft, adding a splash of water if needed.
  3. Meanwhile, boil the potato and swede together for 20 minutes until very soft, then drain and mash with the butter.
  4. Stir the peas into the filling for the last 3 minutes.
  5. Spoon the filling into a dish or ramekins, top with mash and bake at 200C (180C fan) for 20 minutes until golden at the edges.

Serving it to your baby

At 7 months, mash the filling and topping together so the peas are squashed and the texture is soft and lumpy. From 9 months, serve as it is for self-feeding with hands or a spoon.

For the rest of the family

Season the adult portions with salt, pepper and a dash of Worcestershire sauce, and serve with buttered greens.

Storing and reheating

Cool quickly (within an hour), then keep covered in the fridge for up to 2 days or freeze in baby portions for up to 3 months. Defrost overnight in the fridge, reheat until steaming hot all the way through, stir well and let it cool before serving. Never reheat more than once.

Questions parents ask

What is the difference between shepherd's pie and cottage pie?

Shepherd's pie is made with lamb and cottage pie with beef. Both are lovely for babies when made without salt or stock cubes.

Is swede good for babies?

Yes. Swede is naturally sweet, mashes beautifully and adds vitamin C and fibre.
