Makes 4 baby portions plus 2 adult portions

Ingredients

Method

  1. Soften the onion in the oil for 8 minutes, then add garlic, ginger and spices for a minute.
  2. Add the coconut milk and cashew butter and stir until smooth.
  3. Add the cauliflower and chickpeas and simmer for 15 minutes until the cauliflower is very soft.
  4. Add the peas for the last 3 minutes.
  5. Blend a little of the sauce smooth if you like, then mash baby's portion.

Serving it to your baby

At 7 months mash well so the chickpeas are broken down, and serve on rice or with soft chapati. From 9 months offer cauliflower florets as finger food and squash the chickpeas. Only use smooth cashew butter, never whole or chopped nuts.

For the rest of the family

Add salt, green chilli and a squeeze of lemon to the adults' korma, and top with toasted flaked almonds.

Storing and reheating

Cool quickly (within an hour), then keep covered in the fridge for up to 2 days. Freeze in small portions for up to 3 months and defrost overnight in the fridge. Reheat until steaming hot all the way through, stir, then let it cool before serving. Never reheat more than once. Freeze without rice. Rice needs extra care: cool within an hour, keep in the fridge for no more than 1 day, and reheat only once until steaming hot.

Questions parents ask

Can babies have cashew butter?

Yes, smooth nut butters can be introduced from around 6 months, one at a time, in a small amount. Whole or chopped nuts are not safe for under-5s.

Is korma too rich for babies?

Not in normal portions. It is one of the mildest curries and the creamy texture is often a hit with babies.
