🐟 Salmon and sweet potato fishcakes
Soft, golden fishcakes made with flaked salmon and mashed sweet potato, easy for little hands to hold. Salmon brings omega-3 fats and protein, and the sweet potato keeps them moist and naturally sweet.
Makes about 10 small fishcakes
Ingredients
- 1 fillet (about 120g) Salmon (skin and every bone removed)
- 1 medium (about 250g) Sweet potato (peeled and cubed)
- 1 Spring onion (very finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp Parsley (finely chopped)
- 1 Egg (beaten)
- 1 slice Bread (blitzed into crumbs)
- 1 tsp Rapeseed oil (for brushing)
Method
- Heat the oven to 200C (180C fan) and line a baking tray.
- Steam or boil the sweet potato for 12 to 15 minutes until very soft, then drain well and mash.
- Meanwhile, bake or poach the salmon for about 10 minutes until it flakes easily. Cool slightly, then flake it with your fingers, checking carefully for bones.
- Mix the salmon, mash, spring onion, parsley and half the beaten egg until it holds together.
- Shape into 10 small fat fingers or patties, brush with the rest of the egg and roll in the breadcrumbs.
- Brush lightly with oil and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, turning once, until golden and hot through.
Serving it to your baby
At 6 months, shape these as fingers about the length and width of an adult finger so your baby can hold one in a fist and munch the top. They should squash easily between your finger and thumb. For older babies, make small round patties they can pick up with a pincer grip.
For the rest of the family
Make adult-sized cakes from the same mix and season yours with black pepper, lemon zest and a pinch of salt after the baby portion is set aside. Lovely with a green salad and a dollop of yoghurt.
Storing and reheating
Cool quickly and keep covered in the fridge for up to 1 day, or freeze for up to 2 months (only if the fish was not previously frozen). Defrost in the fridge, reheat until piping hot throughout, then cool before serving. Never reheat more than once.

Questions parents ask
Can babies have salmon at 6 months?
Yes. Salmon is a great first fish from around 6 months. As an oily fish, offer up to 2 portions a week for girls and up to 4 for boys, and always check for bones.
Do these fishcakes contain allergens?
Yes: fish, egg and wheat (from the breadcrumbs). Introduce each one separately first, then these are a lovely way to keep offering them together.
