Ingredients

Method

  1. Boil the potatoes until soft, drain well and mash with the butter.
  2. Bake or poach the trout for 8 to 10 minutes until it flakes, then flake and check carefully for bones.
  3. Mix the trout, mash, dill, chives and egg.
  4. Shape into small flat cakes.
  5. Bake on a lined tray at 200C (180C fan) for 15 to 18 minutes, turning once, until golden and hot through.

Serving it to your baby

From 9 months, cut each cake into strips or quarters. For younger babies from 6 months, shape the mix into chunky fingers, or skip the egg and serve the trout and potato mashed on a spoon.

For the rest of the family

Serve adult portions with a squeeze of lemon, a pinch of salt, soured cream and a watercress salad.

Storing and reheating

Cool quickly and keep covered in the fridge for up to 1 day, or freeze for up to 2 months (only if the fish was not previously frozen). Defrost in the fridge, reheat until piping hot throughout, then cool before serving. Never reheat more than once.

Questions parents ask

Is trout good for babies?

Yes. Trout is an oily fish rich in omega-3 fats. Offer up to 2 portions of oily fish a week for girls and up to 4 for boys.

Can I use smoked trout?

Smoked fish is salty, so it is best kept occasional for babies. Fresh trout is the better choice here.
