How to serve agave syrup by age
6 to 9 months
Not yet. Babies do not need sweeteners, and getting used to unsweetened food early helps them enjoy a wide range of flavours. Sweeten porridge or yoghurt with mashed ripe banana, grated apple or a little fruit purée instead.
9 to 12 months
Still not needed. Stewed fruit, mashed berries or a little date purée stirred into porridge or baking add natural sweetness, along with fibre.
12 months and up
From 12 months, small amounts are fine now and then, for example a drizzle over pancakes on a weekend. Keep it occasional and with meals, which is kinder to new teeth.
Choking safety
Agave syrup is a runny liquid and is not a choking concern. The main consideration is sugar and tooth health.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
Good to know
- Agave is an added sugar (mostly fructose), not a healthier alternative to sugar.
- Unlike honey, agave is not linked to infant botulism, but it is still not needed under 12 months.
- Brush teeth twice a day once they appear, especially if your child has sweet foods.
