How to serve bitter gourd by age
6 to 9 months
Scrape out the seeds and the pith, then steam or boil small pieces until very soft. Mash a little into potato, lentils or rice so the bitterness is gentle. For finger food, offer a soft-cooked strip about the size of an adult finger.
9 to 12 months
Chop cooked bitter gourd into small soft pieces and stir it through dhal, scrambled egg or a mild vegetable curry. Soaking the slices in water for 20 minutes before cooking can soften the flavour.
12 months and up
Share family dishes like stir-fried karela with onion and potato, cooked without added salt for your toddler's portion. Keep pieces bite sized and soft.
Choking safety
Raw bitter gourd is firm and the seeds are hard, so always remove the seeds and cook it until it squashes easily between your finger and thumb. Avoid crispy fried rings for young babies.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
