How to serve black pepper by age

6 to 9 months

Start with a tiny pinch of finely ground pepper in a baby portion of mashed avocado, scrambled egg, lentils or buttery mashed vegetables. Grind it fine rather than coarse, and watch how your baby responds before adding more.

9 to 12 months

Use a little in sauces, stews, soups and pasta dishes, such as a cheesy pasta with a twist of pepper. Season the family pot lightly and add more to adult plates.

12 months and up

Use pepper in family cooking as usual. Add extra at the table for adults rather than making the shared dish peppery.

Choking safety

Whole peppercorns are hard and should be removed from stocks and stews or ground finely. A heavy dusting of ground pepper on dry food can make babies cough or sneeze, so mix it into moist food.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
