How to serve brioche by age

6 to 9 months

Plain bread or toast is a better everyday option at this age. If you do offer brioche, lightly toast a slice and cut it into finger-width strips, perhaps spread thinly with a smooth nut butter or mashed avocado. Only offer it after wheat, egg and milk have each been introduced on their own.

9 to 12 months

Lightly toasted brioche strips can be used occasionally for eggy bread, served with mashed berries instead of syrup.

12 months and up

Brioche can be part of family meals now and then, such as a weekend breakfast. Compare labels and choose versions with less sugar and salt.

Choking safety

Soft, doughy bread like brioche can form a sticky ball in the mouth. Lightly toasting it and cutting it into strips helps it break down more safely. Offer small amounts at a time and stay close while your baby eats.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
