How to serve bulgur wheat by age
6 to 9 months
Cook fine bulgur in water until very soft (about 10 to 15 minutes), then stir it into puréed vegetables, mashed lentils or a smooth tomato sauce. You can also squash cooled bulgur with mashed chickpeas or sweet potato into soft patties that are easy to grip.
9 to 12 months
Serve soft bulgur as a loose pilaf with finely chopped cooked vegetables, or mix it into minced lamb or lentil balls to bind them. Babies can scoop it with their fingers or a preloaded spoon.
12 months and up
Offer bulgur salads like a mild tabbouleh with lots of finely chopped parsley, cucumber and tomato, or use it in place of rice in stuffed peppers and stews.
Choking safety
Cooked bulgur is a low choking risk as long as it is fully soft. Undercooked grains can be hard, so taste a few before serving. Loose grains may cause gagging at first, which is normal.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
