How to serve fenugreek by age
6 to 9 months
Add a pinch of ground fenugreek, or a teaspoon of finely chopped fresh methi leaves, to a family-sized pot of dal or vegetable curry. Purée or mash your baby's portion. Pair with sweeter foods such as carrot, potato or squash to soften the bitterness.
9 to 12 months
Crumble a little kasuri methi (dried leaves) into dal, potato or spinach dishes. Offer soft pieces of potato and methi curry as finger food.
12 months and up
Add fresh leaves to roti, paratha or thepla dough without salt. Toddlers enjoy dipping strips into yoghurt.
Choking safety
Whole fenugreek seeds are very hard. Grind them or toast and remove them before serving. Leaves should be finely chopped and cooked soft.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
