🌀 Fusilli for babies: when and how to serve it

How to serve fusilli by age

6 to 9 months

Cook fusilli in unsalted water for a couple of minutes longer than the packet says, so it is soft enough to squash. Offer whole spirals as finger food coated in a smooth sauce such as blended tomato and vegetable, pesto made without salt, or mashed avocado. For spoon-feeding, chop or blend it into the sauce.

9 to 12 months

Serve fusilli with chunkier sauces, flaked fish, grated cheese, or lentil bolognese. Mini fusilli or chopped spirals help your baby practise picking up smaller pieces.

12 months and up

Offer fusilli in family pasta bakes, pasta salads with chopped soft vegetables, or with meat or bean sauces. Toddlers enjoy trying to spear spirals with a fork.

Choking safety

Soft-cooked fusilli is a low choking risk. Avoid undercooked or al dente pasta for young babies, as it is firmer to chew, and do not serve dry, uncooked pasta as a snack or toy.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
