How to serve gooseberries by age
6 to 9 months
Top and tail the berries, then simmer in a splash of water for 5 to 10 minutes until they burst. Mash or sieve and mix with banana, pear or porridge rather than adding sugar.
9 to 12 months
Serve the cooked, mashed gooseberries stirred into yoghurt or oats, or spread on toast fingers. Very ripe dessert gooseberries can be squashed flat or quartered lengthways as finger food.
12 months and up
Offer ripe gooseberries halved or quartered, or bake them into an oat crumble or muffins sweetened with ripe fruit. Keep cutting raw berries until your child is about 5.
Choking safety
Whole raw gooseberries are firm, round and slippery, which makes them a choking hazard. Cook them soft, or cut ripe ones into quarters lengthways or squash them flat. Stay with your baby while they eat, and remember gagging is normal and noisy, while choking is often silent.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
Good to know
