How to serve gouda by age
6 to 9 months
Grate pasteurised gouda finely and stir a small pinch into warm mashed potato, broccoli purée or pasta, where it melts in. For finger food, offer a thin slice about the size of two adult fingers, or melt grated gouda onto toast fingers.
9 to 12 months
Serve small, thin pieces or grated gouda once baby has a pincer grip. Melt it into omelettes, cheese sauces or toasties cut into strips.
12 months and up
Offer thin slices or small cubes with apple slices and bread, in sandwiches or on top of baked pasta. Young gouda is milder and softer than aged gouda, which is saltier and harder.
Choking safety
Cubes of firm cheese can lodge in the throat. For babies grate it, melt it or cut thin flat slices; avoid chunky cubes until your child chews well, and even then cut cubes small. Always offer it while baby is sitting upright.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
