How to serve grapes by age

6 to 9 months

Choose large seedless grapes. Cut each one lengthways into quarters so it cannot form a round plug. You can also squash quarters flat between your fingers, or mash peeled grapes into yoghurt or porridge. Peeling helps some babies who gag on the skin.

9 to 12 months

Keep quartering grapes lengthways. Offer them as finger food or chopped into fruit salads, overnight oats and yoghurt. Your baby's pincer grip will enjoy picking up the little pieces.

12 months and up

Grapes still need to be quartered lengthways for toddlers and young children. Offer them with cheese, crackers and cucumber for a snack plate, and always sit your child down while eating.

Choking safety

Grapes are one of the most common foods involved in choking in young children. Never offer whole or halved grapes. Cut them lengthways into quarters until at least 5 years old, and always supervise eating.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
