How to serve kefir by age
6 to 9 months
Stir a spoonful of plain, pasteurised kefir into porridge, mashed banana or fruit purée. Its sour taste is new for many babies, so start with a little mixed into a familiar food. Offer pre-loaded spoons for self-feeding.
9 to 12 months
Use kefir in place of milk in pancake batter, overnight oats or simple smoothies served in an open cup. Mix it with natural yoghurt as a dip for soft fruit fingers.
12 months and up
From 12 months your toddler can have a small amount of plain kefir in an open cup with meals, alongside their usual whole milk. Keep using it in breakfasts, bakes and dips.
Choking safety
Kefir is a liquid, so it is low choking risk. Offer it in an open or free-flow cup, or mixed into food, with your baby sitting upright, and take care with any fruit you add.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
