How to serve mascarpone by age

6 to 9 months

Stir a teaspoon of pasteurised mascarpone into puréed butternut squash, peas or mashed fruit such as pear or raspberry. Spread a thin layer on toast fingers for baby to hold. Keep amounts small because it is very rich and filling.

9 to 12 months

Use a tablespoon to make a quick creamy pasta sauce with peas or spinach, or swirl it through porridge. Mix with mashed berries as a soft dip for toast strips or soft cooked vegetable sticks.

12 months and up

Offer it as part of family meals: in risotto, on crumpets with fruit, or whipped with plain yoghurt as a topping for fruit. Choose plain mascarpone rather than sweetened dessert versions such as tiramisu.

Choking safety

Mascarpone is smooth and low choking risk. Spread it thinly on bread or toast, as thick layers of any sticky spread can be hard for a new eater to move around the mouth.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).

Is mascarpone safe for babies?

Yes, pasteurised mascarpone is safe from about 6 months. It is a fresh cheese, not a mould-ripened one, so it does not need cooking.

Is mascarpone too fatty for babies?

Babies need fat for energy and growth, so full-fat dairy is fine. Mascarpone is very rich, though, so a teaspoon or two is plenty alongside other foods.
