How to serve muesli by age

6 to 9 months

Choose a no-added-sugar, nut-free muesli or make your own from oats, finely ground seeds and finely chopped dried fruit. Soak 2 tablespoons in whole milk or breast milk overnight, then blend or mash until soft. Thick soaked muesli can be offered on a preloaded spoon.

9 to 12 months

Serve soaked Bircher-style muesli with grated apple or mashed banana, or bake it with egg and banana into soft breakfast fingers. Mash or chop any raisins first.

12 months and up

Offer muesli soaked or with milk and plain yoghurt. Keep checking packs for whole or chopped nuts, which are not suitable until 5, and for hard clusters.

Choking safety

Whole nuts, hard seeds, crunchy clusters and chewy chunks of dried fruit are the risks in muesli. Choose a nut-free muesli or grind it, chop dried fruit small, and soak it so everything softens. Dry crunchy muesli is not suitable for babies.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
