How to serve mulberries by age

6 to 9 months

Pull off the small green stalk and squash fresh ripe mulberries flat, or mash them into yoghurt, porridge or ricotta. Soak dried mulberries in just-boiled water for 10 minutes until plump, then blend or chop very finely.

9 to 12 months

Offer fresh mulberries halved or lightly squashed so baby can pick them up with the pincer grip. Stir finely chopped soaked dried mulberries into pancake batter or oat bakes.

12 months and up

Fresh mulberries whole for confident chewers, sitting down. Chopped dried mulberries can go into snacks alongside meals.

Choking safety

Fresh mulberries are soft and fairly low risk once squashed, but dried ones are firm and sticky and can lodge in the mouth. Soak and chop dried mulberries for babies, and remove the tough little stalk from fresh ones.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
