๐ Plaice for babies: when and how to serve it
Can babies eat plaice? Yes, from about 6 months. Plaice is a soft, mild white flatfish that flakes into tender pieces once cooked, which makes it one of the gentlest ways to introduce fish to your baby.
Good source of: Protein, Iodine, Vitamin B12, Selenium
How to serve plaice by age
6 to 9 months
Steam, poach or bake fillets for a few minutes until the flesh turns white and flakes. Remove the skin, check for bones, then mash with your baby's usual milk and a little potato, or offer soft flakes for your baby to pick up and squash.
9 to 12 months
Serve flaked plaice in a simple fish pie with mashed potato topping, mixed through pasta with peas, or shaped into soft fishcakes that are easy to hold.
12 months and up
Offer pieces of baked plaice with a squeeze of lemon and a little butter, or homemade breadcrumbed plaice goujons baked in the oven. Serve with vegetables the rest of the family is eating.
Choking safety
Plaice has a row of small, fine bones along the edges of each fillet. Remove the skin, then run your fingers through every flake before serving. Cooked plaice is very soft, so it rarely causes problems once boneless.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
