How to serve polenta by age
6 to 9 months
Cook polenta with water or baby's usual milk until thick and creamy, then cool and serve from a spoon, perhaps with puréed vegetables stirred through. For finger food, let cooked polenta set in a tray, then cut into thick fingers and lightly bake or pan-fry so the outside holds together.
9 to 12 months
Offer soft polenta fingers or cubes, or creamy polenta topped with a tomato and lentil sauce or grated cheese. Babies can practise scooping it with a preloaded spoon.
12 months and up
Serve creamy polenta with stews and ragùs, polenta chips baked in the oven, or polenta cake made with fruit instead of lots of sugar.
Choking safety
Soft polenta is low risk. Baked or fried polenta should be soft inside with no hard, crunchy edges, so check by squashing a piece before serving. Avoid instant polenta mixes with added salt or cheese powder.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
