How to serve pumpkin seeds by age
6 to 9 months
Grind plain, unsalted pumpkin seeds into a fine powder in a spice grinder or blender. Stir 1 to 2 teaspoons into porridge, yoghurt or vegetable purées, or thin smooth pumpkin seed butter with warm water and spread it on toast fingers.
9 to 12 months
Sprinkle ground seeds over pasta, roasted vegetables or fruit, or mix them into homemade oat bars and muffins. Seed butter makes a good dip for soft fruit slices.
12 months and up
Keep using ground seeds or seed butter in cooking and baking. Whole seeds remain a choking hazard until about 5 years.
Choking safety
Whole pumpkin seeds are small, hard and can be breathed into the airway, so they are not suitable for children under 5. Grind them finely or use a smooth seed butter spread thinly. Avoid thick blobs of seed butter, which can stick to the roof of the mouth.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
