How to serve red lentil pasta by age
6 to 9 months
Cook the pasta a minute or two longer than the packet says so it is very soft, as lentil pasta can firm up as it cools. Offer large shapes like fusilli or penne to hold, or blitz cooked pasta into a tomato and vegetable sauce for spoon-feeding.
9 to 12 months
Serve smaller shapes or chopped pasta with sauces like tomato and lentil, pea pesto or a cheesy broccoli sauce. Your baby can practise picking up pieces with their fingers.
12 months and up
Toddlers can enjoy red lentil pasta in family bakes, pasta salads and soups. Serve it with a vitamin C food like tomatoes or peppers to help their body absorb the iron.
Choking safety
Well-cooked lentil pasta is low choking risk. Undercooked lentil pasta can be firm and crumbly, so cook it until soft and check a piece before serving.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
