How to serve risotto rice by age
6 to 9 months
Cook risotto rice in water or homemade low-salt stock until very soft, then blend or mash it with vegetables like squash or peas. Cooled sticky rice can be shaped into soft balls to hold.
9 to 12 months
Serve a soft risotto with finely chopped vegetables, flaked fish or shredded chicken. Stir in a little grated cheese or unsalted butter for creaminess.
12 months and up
Serve family risottos with mushrooms, tomato or seafood. Try baked arancini-style balls (no deep frying) for toddlers.
Choking safety
Cooked risotto rice is a low choking risk. Avoid hard, crispy grains from the bottom of the pan for babies.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
