How to serve sea bass by age
6 to 9 months
Bake, steam or poach for 10 to 15 minutes until opaque and flaking easily. Remove skin and bones, then mash with a little milk or potato, or offer large soft flakes to pick up and squash.
9 to 12 months
Serve flaked sea bass mixed into rice, pasta or mashed vegetables. Small fishcakes made with potato and peas are easy to hold and pick up.
12 months and up
Offer baked sea bass alongside family meals, flavoured with lemon, herbs or a little garlic rather than salt. Toddlers can eat the crispy skin if it is pan-fried soft enough to chew.
Choking safety
The biggest risk with sea bass is small pin bones. Run your fingertips over every flake before serving and remove any bones you find. Offer the fish soft and moist rather than dried out, which is easier to chew and swallow.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
