How to serve sea bream by age

6 to 9 months

Bake, steam or poach a fillet until it is opaque all the way through and flakes easily. Remove the skin and every bone, then mash the flesh with a little breast milk, formula or mashed potato for a smooth start. For finger food, offer large soft flakes your baby can squash in their fist.

9 to 12 months

Break bream into smaller flakes so your baby can practise their pincer grip. Stir it through rice, couscous or soft-cooked pasta, or fold it into mashed sweet potato and shape small fishcakes baked in the oven.

12 months and up

Share bream from the family meal, baked with lemon, olive oil and herbs, alongside roast vegetables or in a mild tomato stew.

Choking safety

Sea bream is often sold whole, and whole fish carries lots of fine pin bones. Fillet it carefully, then press through the cooked flesh with your fingertips to find and remove any bones before serving. Avoid crispy, crunchy skin for young babies.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
