How to serve soya mince by age
6 to 9 months
Rehydrate dried soya mince in hot water, or use frozen, then simmer it in a tomato and vegetable sauce until very soft. Blend or mash with the sauce for early spoonfuls. For finger food, mix cooked mince with mashed potato and shape into soft patties.
9 to 12 months
Serve soya mince in a thick bolognese over pasta shapes, or in a cottage pie with a soft mashed topping. Keep it moist so it does not crumble dry in the mouth.
12 months and up
Use it in tacos, wraps, lasagne and mild chilli with the rest of the family. Flavour with garlic, onion, herbs and mild paprika rather than stock cubes or soy sauce.
Choking safety
Soya mince is low choking risk when it is moist and cooked soft in sauce. On its own it can be dry and crumbly, which may cause coughing or gagging, so always keep plenty of sauce through it.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
