6 to 9 months
Choose a smooth sunflower seed butter with no added salt or sugar. Thin a teaspoon with warm water or breast milk and spread thinly on toast fingers, or stir it into porridge, yoghurt or fruit purée.
9 to 12 months
Spread thinly on toast, pancakes or soft rice cakes, or mix into plain yoghurt as a dip for soft fruit such as banana or ripe pear. It can also replace peanut butter in baking.
12 months and up
Serve on toast or crackers, in sandwiches or as a dip with apple slices (thin slices, or cooked soft for younger toddlers). It is useful for packed lunches where nuts are not allowed.
Choking safety
Thick seed butters are sticky and can be hard to swallow. Always spread thinly or thin with liquid, and never offer spoonfuls of thick seed butter on their own or on soft white bread that forms a gummy ball.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
