How to serve wholewheat pasta by age
6 to 9 months
Cook a little longer than the packet says so it is soft, then blend or mash into sauces. For finger food, choose larger shapes like fusilli or penne that are easy to grab, coated in a smooth sauce.
9 to 12 months
Offer smaller shapes, chopped spaghetti or macaroni with vegetable, lentil or fish sauces.
12 months and up
Serve any pasta shape with family sauces. Mixing half white and half wholewheat can help fussier toddlers adjust.
Choking safety
Soft cooked pasta is low risk. Very small shapes can be swallowed whole, and dry or undercooked pasta is harder to manage, so cook it well and keep it saucy.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
