🫐 11 weeks pregnant: your baby is about the size of a fig

At 11 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a fig, and tiny movements have begun even though you cannot feel them yet.

Baby is about 4.1 cm

Your baby this week

Your baby is around the size of a fig and growing quickly. The head still makes up about half of their length, but the body is catching up. Little hands can open and close, and your baby may bring them towards their face. Bones are beginning to harden, and the diaphragm is forming, which means small hiccup-like movements can start. The placenta is growing steadily, getting ready to take over the job of feeding your baby and making hormones.

You this week

Your bump may not be showing yet, but you could feel bloated and rounder by the evening. Tiredness and sickness may begin to lift slightly for some mums, while others still feel very rough. You might notice a little more vaginal discharge, which is normal if it is clear or white and does not smell. Heartburn can start as hormones relax the muscles in your tummy. Small meals and sitting upright after eating can help.

Appointments around now

Your dating scan is usually offered between 11 and 14 weeks. It checks how many weeks pregnant you are, how many babies there are, and that your baby is developing. Combined screening can be done at the same visit if you choose it.

Questions to ask your midwife

When to call your midwife or maternity unit

Please call your GP, midwife or NHS 111 if you have any bleeding, tummy pain that does not settle (especially low down on one side), or you are being sick so often you cannot keep fluids down. You are never wasting anyone's time.

Questions

What is the dating scan?

It is an ultrasound scan between 11 and 14 weeks that estimates your due date, checks how many babies there are and looks at your baby's early development.

Is it normal to not have a bump at 11 weeks?

Yes, very normal. Many mums, especially in a first pregnancy, do not show until well into the second trimester.
