๐ 35 weeks pregnant: your baby is about the size of a honeydew melon
At 35 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a honeydew melon, and space is snugger, so movements may feel more like rolls than flips.
Your baby this week
Your baby is around 46.2cm long and about 2.4kg, roughly the size of a honeydew melon. Most of the growing now is about weight, as fat stores build to keep them warm and give them energy after birth. Their kidneys are fully developed and their liver is starting to process some waste. Your baby is putting sucking, swallowing and breathing together in rehearsal for feeding. Space is snug, so you will feel more rolls and pushes than flips, but movements should not slow down.
You this week
Your bump is big and you may feel heavy, achy and tired by the afternoon. Backache, pelvic aches, swollen ankles, heartburn and broken sleep are all very common. As your baby moves lower, you may need the loo even more often. Some mums feel calm and ready, some feel anxious, and some flip between the two. Little comforts matter now: a nap, a good meal, or a friend who just listens.
Kind things to do this week
- Plan how you will get to hospital, with a backup if your first option falls through.
- Batch cook or stock up on easy meals for the early weeks.
- Take short naps or rests during the day if your nights are broken.
Appointments around now
No routine appointment this week. Your next one is usually at 36 weeks.
Questions to ask your midwife
- What will we cover at my 36 week appointment?
- How will I know if my waters have broken?
When to call your midwife or maternity unit
If your baby's movements slow down, stop or feel different to their usual pattern, contact your maternity unit straight away, day or night. Do not wait until the next day. Please also call your midwife or maternity unit if you have bleeding, fluid leaking, a severe headache, changes to your vision, sudden swelling, or itching (especially on the palms of your hands or soles of your feet). If you have regular tightenings or period-like pains before 37 weeks, call your maternity unit too.
