🥣 Cardamom semolina breakfast porridge
A silky semolina porridge gently scented with cardamom, inspired by South Asian sooji, sweetened with ripe banana instead of sugar.
Makes 2 baby portions
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp (about 20g) Semolina
- 200ml Cow's milk (full fat, or formula)
- a tiny pinch of ground seeds Cardamom
- half, ripe Banana (mashed)
- 1/2 tsp Ghee (optional)
Method
- Warm the ghee in a small pan and toast the semolina for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring, until it smells nutty.
- Slowly pour in the milk, whisking all the time to stop lumps.
- Simmer for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring, until thick and creamy.
- Stir in the cardamom and mashed banana.
- Cool to warm and serve.
Serving it to your baby
At 6 months, serve smooth on a preloaded spoon. From 9 months, make it thicker and add soft fruit pieces like chopped mango or pear.
For the rest of the family
For adults, add a few saffron threads, chopped pistachios and a little sugar or jaggery to taste.
Storing and reheating
Cool quickly and keep covered in the fridge for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to 1 month. Reheat until steaming, stir and add a splash of milk, then cool. Never reheat more than once.

Questions parents ask
Is semolina suitable for babies?
Yes. Semolina is made from wheat, so it contains gluten, and it is a good way to introduce wheat from 6 months.
Can I use whole cardamom pods?
Yes, but remove them before serving. Ground seeds give a more even, gentle flavour.
