Ingredients

Method

  1. Drain the soaked dates.
  2. Blend the dates, oats, ground almonds, cocoa and coconut oil until it comes together as a soft dough.
  3. Roll into small balls, then squash each one flat into a disc.
  4. Chill for 30 minutes to firm up.

Serving it to your baby

From 12 months, serve flattened discs or break into small pieces. Do not serve as round balls, which are a choking hazard. Dates are sticky, so offer with a drink of water.

For the rest of the family

Roll adult portions in desiccated coconut or chopped nuts.

Storing and reheating

Keep in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Questions parents ask

Are dates a choking risk?

Whole dates are sticky and can be tricky, so blend them into recipes like this and flatten the bites.

Is the cocoa powder OK for toddlers?

A small amount of unsweetened cocoa powder is fine for toddlers. It contains a little caffeine, so keep it small.
