How to serve ground almonds by age
6 to 9 months
Start by stirring about a quarter of a teaspoon of ground almonds into porridge, plain yoghurt or fruit purée. If there is no reaction, increase gradually over the next few servings to about a teaspoon. Ground almonds also thicken a runny purée nicely.
9 to 12 months
Keep offering ground almonds a few times a week: in pancakes, muffins without added sugar, or as a coating for soft fish or chicken strips.
12 months and up
Use them in family baking, crumble toppings and curries such as a mild korma. Whole and chopped almonds are still not safe until 5.
Choking safety
Ground almonds are low choking risk. Whole or chopped almonds are not suitable for under-5s, and flaked or slivered almonds are hard and sharp, so stick to ground almonds or smooth almond butter.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
