A 7 month old usually manages wake windows of 2 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes and takes 2 to 3 naps a day, each lasting about 1 to 2 hours. Bedtime usually lands somewhere between 6pm and 8pm. Total sleep across 24 hours is typically 12 to 16 hours.
These numbers come from OBubba's own sleep engine for weeks 30 to 34. They are a guide to start from, not a target your baby has to hit.
At a glance
- Wake windows: 2 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes
- Naps: 2 to 3 naps a day
- Nap length: 1 to 2 hours each
- Total day sleep: 2 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes
- Total sleep in 24 hours: 12 to 16 hours
- Bedtime window: 6pm to 8pm
A sample day
Here is one example of how a day could look, starting with a 7am wake up. It is just one example: babies vary, and so do days.
- 7:00am Wake up for the day, milk feed
- 9:30am Nap 1 (1 hour 15 minutes), after 2 hours 30 minutes awake
- 10:45am Awake
- 1:45pm Nap 2 (1 hour 30 minutes), after 3 hours awake
- 3:15pm Awake
- 6:45pm Asleep for the night, after 3 hours 30 minutes awake (bedtime routine starts around 6:15pm)
That adds up to 2 hours 45 minutes of day sleep. This example shows a 2 nap day. Many 7 month olds still need 3 naps on some days, especially when naps are short.
What's changing at this age
Seven months is a classic time for the 3 to 2 nap transition. Wake windows stretch to roughly 2 to 3 hours 30 minutes, and many babies begin to resist the third nap or take so long to settle that it pushes bedtime late.
The transition is rarely a clean switch. Expect a mix of 2 nap and 3 nap days for a while. On a 2 nap day, bedtime may need to be earlier in the window to stop the last stretch becoming too long.
Crawling, sitting and pulling up are all on the way for many babies, and a development wave around now can make settling harder for a few days. Separation awareness may start to show too.
Common sleep problems and gentle fixes
Refusing the third nap
If the third nap is regularly a battle, try a 2 nap day with slightly longer wake windows and an earlier bedtime.
Short naps during the transition
Naps can wobble while the day reorganises. Keep going with a consistent pattern for a week or two before deciding whether it is working.
Early waking
Often linked to a last wake window that is too long. Bring bedtime 15 to 30 minutes earlier on 2 nap days.
Practising new skills at night
Sitting or crawling in the cot is common. Plenty of daytime practice helps, and a calm, consistent response at night keeps things simple.
If things feel hard, you are not doing anything wrong. Small, gentle changes made one at a time, and watched for a few days, are usually kinder for everyone than a big overhaul. Look after yourself too: rest when you can, and lean on the people around you.
How OBubba helps
An age chart can only tell you what is typical. OBubba predicts your baby's next nap and bedtime from their own rhythm, not just the numbers on this page, and adjusts through the day as naps run long or short. After around four days of logging, the guidance becomes personal to your baby.

Safety and a gentle reminder
Every sleep, day and night, should follow safer sleep guidance. See The Lullaby Trust safer sleep advice and NHS: helping your baby to sleep. If your baby was born prematurely, use their corrected age when reading these ranges. The ranges are guides, not targets. If you are worried about your baby's sleep, feeding or health, speak to your health visitor or GP.
