How to serve burrata by age

6 to 9 months

Check the label says pasteurised. Spoon a little of the creamy centre onto toast fingers, stir it into tomato pasta sauce, or mix it into mashed ripe peach. Tear the outer shell into thin strips or skip it, as it is chewy.

9 to 12 months

Offer small torn pieces of burrata with soft roasted tomatoes or courgette. Stir it through warm pasta so it melts, or spread it on soft bread.

12 months and up

Toddlers can share burrata with tomatoes and bread or on homemade pizza. Keep tearing the outer skin into small pieces.

Choking safety

The outer layer of burrata is like fresh mozzarella: smooth, chewy and stretchy, which can be hard for young babies to manage. Tear it thinly or cut it small, and offer the soft creamy centre on spoons or spread on food.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
