How to serve coconut by age
6 to 9 months
Stir unsweetened desiccated coconut or coconut milk into purées, porridge and curries. Fresh coconut flesh is hard, so finely grate it. Coconut milk adds creaminess and energy to curries, dals and porridge.
9 to 12 months
Offer finely grated coconut in pancakes or yoghurt, or coconut milk in mild curries and rice. Coconut yoghurt (unsweetened) is a dairy-free alternative to try.
12 months and up
Serve grated coconut in baking and cereal, or coconut in curries. Toddlers can enjoy coconut in baking and curries. Coconut flakes (unsweetened, fine) can top porridge.
Choking safety
Fresh coconut flesh is hard and chewy and can be a choking risk in pieces. Grate it finely, and avoid sweetened coconut chips.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
