How to serve guava by age

6 to 9 months

Peel, scoop out all the seeds and mash or blend the ripe flesh. Offer soft strips of seedless flesh to hold, or sieve blended guava to remove any seed fragments.

9 to 12 months

Cut seedless ripe flesh into small soft pieces, or stir mashed guava into yoghurt and porridge.

12 months and up

Serve slices with the seeds removed, or blend into smoothies and sieve out the seeds. Guava pairs well with lentil and bean dishes.

Choking safety

Guava seeds are hard and can be a choking hazard, so remove them for babies and young children. Underripe guava is firm and gritty, so choose ripe, fragrant fruit that gives a little when pressed.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
