How to serve mangosteen by age
6 to 9 months
Score around the middle of the purple rind and twist it open, lift out the white segments, remove any seeds and squash or mash the flesh. Small seedless segments can be offered whole to grab.
9 to 12 months
Offer small seedless pieces for pincer practice, or stir mashed mangosteen into yoghurt.
12 months and up
Serve segments with seeds removed, on their own or in fruit salads with mango or banana.
Choking safety
Larger segments contain a hard seed, so check every piece by squeezing it gently and remove seeds. The thick purple rind is tough, bitter and not for eating, and it stains clothes, so open it away from your baby.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
