How to serve salmon fillet by age
6 to 9 months
Bake, steam or poach salmon until it is opaque and flakes easily (about 12 to 15 minutes in the oven). Remove skin and every pin bone, then mash with potato, sweet potato or a little yoghurt. For finger food, offer large moist flakes or soft homemade salmon fishcakes.
9 to 12 months
Offer smaller flakes for pincer practice, salmon stirred through pasta or risotto, or salmon and pea fishcakes.
12 months and up
Serve salmon with the family as fillets, in pasta bakes, fish pie or noodle dishes, within the weekly oily fish limits.
Choking safety
Salmon fillets can contain fine pin bones. Run your fingers over the flesh and flake it carefully before serving. Overcooked salmon gets dry, so keep it moist with sauce or mash.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
