How to serve sea trout by age
6 to 9 months
Bake, steam or poach sea trout for 12 to 15 minutes until it is opaque and flakes easily. Remove the skin and every bone, then mash with potato, sweet potato or a little breast milk or formula. Large soft flakes are a good first finger food.
9 to 12 months
Serve flaked trout with pasta, rice or couscous, or make soft fishcakes with mashed potato and peas. A squeeze of lemon and chopped dill add flavour without salt.
12 months and up
Offer baked sea trout with family meals, in a fish pie or mixed with cream cheese as a spread. Choose fresh rather than smoked or cured trout most of the time.
Choking safety
Sea trout has fine pin bones that are easy to miss. Run your fingers through the flesh carefully before serving. Keep the fish moist and soft rather than dry.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
