How to serve sesame seeds by age
6 to 9 months
Grind toasted sesame seeds to a fine powder and sprinkle a pinch over porridge, yoghurt or mashed vegetables. Alternatively stir 1/4 teaspoon of smooth tahini into a purée. Finger food: spread thinly loosened tahini on toast fingers.
9 to 12 months
Keep using ground seeds or tahini in hummus, dips and sauces. A few whole seeds pressed onto a soft bread crust or baked into a soft muffin are fine, as they are tiny and mostly add texture.
12 months and up
Sprinkle whole seeds over stir-fries, noodles, roasted vegetables and salads. Sesame bread sticks and bagels are fine for toddlers with good chewing skills.
Choking safety
Single seeds are too small to block the airway, but large spoonfuls can clump. Tahini is very thick and sticky straight from the jar, so always thin it with water, yoghurt or lemon juice before serving.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).

Questions parents ask
Can babies eat sesame seeds?
Can babies eat sesame seeds? Yes, from about 6 months, ground or as smooth tahini. Sesame is one of the common allergens, and offering it early and then keeping it in the diet regularly is the approach recommended in UK guidance.
Should I grind sesame seeds for my baby?
Grinding them helps your baby digest them and absorb more of the nutrients. Whole seeds often pass through undigested.
Is sesame oil the same as sesame seeds for allergies?
Refined sesame oil contains very little protein, so it is not a reliable way to introduce sesame. Use ground seeds or tahini instead.
How often should I offer sesame once introduced?
Once your baby has had it without a reaction, aim to include it regularly, around once or twice a week, to help keep it in the diet.
