How to serve sunflower seeds by age

6 to 9 months

Blitz shelled, unsalted seeds into a fine powder and stir 1 teaspoon into porridge, yoghurt or fruit purée. Or spread a thin layer of smooth sunflower seed butter on toast fingers or soft pancake strips.

9 to 12 months

Use ground seeds in baking (muffins, flapjack-style soft bars) or as a coating for fish or chicken goujons. Thin seed butter with yoghurt for a dip.

12 months and up

Keep using ground seeds and seed butter. Whole sunflower seeds baked into bread are usually fine for confident chewers, but avoid handing over loose whole seeds as a snack for younger children.

Choking safety

Whole sunflower seeds, and especially seeds in their shells, are a choking hazard for babies and toddlers. Grind them or use seed butter thinned with water or yoghurt, never thick spoonfuls.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
