How to serve sweet potato wedges by age
6 to 9 months
Cut sweet potato into wedges roughly the size of an adult finger, toss in a teaspoon of oil and roast at 200C for 25 to 30 minutes until a knife slides through easily. Your baby should be able to squash a wedge between your finger and thumb. Leave the skin on for grip if you like, or peel it. Any extra can be mashed with a little milk for spoon-feeding.
9 to 12 months
Offer smaller wedges or cubes so your baby can practise picking them up. Dip in plain yoghurt, hummus or a mild guacamole, or sprinkle with smoked paprika or cinnamon before roasting.
12 months and up
Serve sweet potato wedges as a side with fish, chicken, beans or eggs. Toddlers can help season them with herbs and spices before roasting.
Choking safety
Wedges should be soft all the way through. Crispy, browned ends and edges can be hard, so trim them for young babies. Avoid serving wedges that have cooled and firmed up; reheat until soft, then cool to a safe temperature.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
