How to serve avocado by age

6 to 9 months

Mash ripe avocado smooth, on its own or with banana. For finger food, offer thick ripe slices; rolling them in ground oats or ground seeds makes them easier to grip. If slices keep slipping, leave a strip of skin on one end as a handle, removing it once your baby has eaten the flesh.

9 to 12 months

Serve smaller soft cubes, avocado on toast fingers or mashed into pasta.

12 months and up

Spread on toast, add to wraps and salads, or blend into dips.

Choking safety

Ripe avocado is soft, but firm unripe avocado is a choking risk. It should squash easily when pressed. Slippery slices can be hard to hold, so a light coating of ground oats helps.

Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
