A 2 month old usually manages wake windows of 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes and takes 4 naps a day, each lasting about 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. There is no fixed bedtime yet: the evening sleep usually starts somewhere between 5pm and 9pm. Total sleep across 24 hours is typically 14 to 17 hours.
These numbers come from OBubba's own sleep engine for weeks 9 to 12. They are a guide to start from, not a target your baby has to hit.
At a glance
- Wake windows: 45 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes
- Naps: 4 naps a day
- Nap length: 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes each
- Total day sleep: 3 to 5 hours
- Total sleep in 24 hours: 14 to 17 hours
- Bedtime window: 5pm to 9pm (no fixed bedtime yet)
A sample day
Here is one example of how a day could look, starting with a 7am wake up. It is just one example: babies vary, and so do days.
- 7:00am Wake up for the day, milk feed
- 8:15am Nap 1 (1 hour), after 1 hour 15 minutes awake
- 9:15am Awake
- 10:45am Nap 2 (1 hour 30 minutes), after 1 hour 30 minutes awake
- 12:15pm Awake
- 1:45pm Nap 3 (1 hour), after 1 hour 30 minutes awake
- 2:45pm Awake
- 4:15pm Nap 4 (45 minutes), after 1 hour 30 minutes awake
- 5:00pm Awake
- 6:30pm Asleep for the night, after 1 hour 30 minutes awake (bedtime routine starts around 6:00pm)
That adds up to 4 hours 15 minutes of day sleep. Some days the naps will be shorter and the day will include an extra catnap, and that is fine.
What's changing at this age
Around 9 to 12 weeks many babies start to show a little more pattern. Wake windows stretch slightly, the day often settles into around 4 naps, and you may notice your baby is more interested in faces, voices and play.
The body clock is getting stronger, and some families find the evening becomes a little more predictable. A consistent wind-down, such as a feed, a clean nappy, sleeping bag on and a song, can start to work as a gentle cue even before a firm bedtime appears.
Many babies go through a development wave around now. You might see more alertness, more fussiness and some unsettled sleep for a few days. It passes, and it is a sign of a busy, growing brain.
Common sleep problems and gentle fixes
Short naps
Naps of 30 to 45 minutes are still very common. If your baby wakes upset, try a little gentle settling before getting them up.
The late afternoon slump
The last nap of the day is often the hardest. A short catnap in the pram or sling is perfectly good enough to bridge the gap to bedtime.
Bedtime moves around
That is expected at 2 months. Watch for sleepy cues rather than the clock, and keep the routine the same even when the time changes.
Early evening crying
Slow things down, lower the lights and offer closeness. If crying feels different or you are worried, your health visitor or GP is the right person to talk to.
If things feel hard, you are not doing anything wrong. Small, gentle changes made one at a time, and watched for a few days, are usually kinder for everyone than a big overhaul. Look after yourself too: rest when you can, and lean on the people around you.
How OBubba helps
An age chart can only tell you what is typical. OBubba predicts your baby's next nap and bedtime from their own rhythm, not just the numbers on this page, and adjusts through the day as naps run long or short. After around four days of logging, the guidance becomes personal to your baby.
