How to serve saffron by age
6 to 9 months
Soak 5 to 10 threads in a tablespoon of warm water for 10 minutes, then stir the golden liquid into a family pot of rice, mashed potato or a mild chicken or fish stew. Baby's portion will carry only a trace. Shape saffron rice into small flat patties for finger food.
9 to 12 months
Use in risotto, pilaf and paella-style rice (without chorizo or salty stock), and in gentle stews with peas and chicken. Keep to a small pinch per family pot.
12 months and up
Use in family dishes such as saffron chicken, fish stews and biryani-style rice. A pinch of threads in milky rice pudding with fruit is a nice no-added-sugar treat.
Choking safety
Saffron threads soften when soaked and cooked and are no choking risk. Stirring the soaked liquid through means no threads clump together.
Gagging is common and noisy while babies learn to eat. Choking is usually silent. Always stay with your baby while they eat, sitting upright. How to help a choking baby (NHS).
Good to know
- Use only a few threads; saffron is very strong and large amounts are not suitable for anyone.
- Cheap powdered 'saffron' may be mixed with colourings; threads from a trusted brand are best.
